What is a helical pile?

A helical pile, also called a screw pile, is a steel shaft with one or more helical plates welded near the tip. A hydraulic drive turns the pile into the ground like a large screw until it reaches soil dense enough to carry the load. Because the pile anchors below the frost line, it resists heave and settlement, and it can carry weight right after installation with no concrete cure time.

Helical pile FAQs

A helical pile foundation supports a structure on steel piles screwed into the ground instead of poured concrete footings. Each pile is turned down until it reaches soil that can carry the design load, then the structure connects to a bracket on top. It works well on soft, wet, or frost-prone ground.

Depth depends on the soil. Piles are driven until the installation torque shows they have reached firm, load-bearing ground. In much of Ontario that is anywhere from about 10 feet to more than 30 feet, and always below the local frost line.

Capacity depends on the pile size and the soil. Larger shafts and helix plates carry more, and the crew confirms the capacity from the torque reading as each pile goes in. Your engineer sets the required capacity for the project.

For many projects, yes. They install in hours with no excavation or cure time, they reach below the frost line, and they hold in soil where poured footings would shift. A full concrete basement can still make sense on some builds.

Yes. They are screwed into the ground below the frost line rather than poured, so freezing temperatures do not affect the install the way they affect concrete. That makes them a common choice for winter builds across Ontario.
