Sheet Piling for Retaining Walls, Shoring & More

Sheet piling creates a strong, continuous steel wall below and above ground to retain soil, support excavations and protect areas exposed to changing ground or water conditions. Interlocking steel sheets, often called sheet piles, are installed into the ground to form an engineered barrier that can be used as either a temporary construction system or a permanent part of the finished project.

As experienced sheet piling contractors, we provide sheet piling in Ontario for both residential and commercial applications. Our projects range from retaining walls and waterfront properties to sheet piling shoring, excavation support and other sites where strong earth retention is required.

When Is Sheet Piling Used for a Retaining Wall?

Not every retaining wall is built the same way. Block, timber, armour stone and poured concrete may work for some properties, but larger grade changes, difficult soil, waterfront conditions or restricted construction space can call for a deeper structural solution.

A sheet piling retaining wall extends into the ground rather than relying only on a wide footing at the surface. The steel sheets form a continuous wall designed to resist the pressure of the soil behind it. This makes sheet piling an option for residential properties, commercial sites, shorelines and projects where a conventional landscape retaining wall may not be suitable.

Permanent or Temporary

Steel sheet piling can be designed for permanent retaining walls or temporary excavation and shoring applications.

Residential & Commercial

We install sheet piling for homeowners, builders, developers, contractors and commercial construction projects.

Engineered for the Site

The wall system is planned around project loads, soil conditions, wall height, water conditions and other site requirements.

Shoreline Applications

Sheet pile walls can provide strong earth retention along waterfront and shoreline properties where soil and water meet.

Strong Earth Retention

Interlocking steel sheets create a continuous retaining system for projects that require more than a conventional surface-level wall.

Why Choose a Steel Sheet Pile Retaining Wall?

Retaining soil becomes more complicated as wall height, excavation depth, water and nearby structures come into play. In these situations, the retaining system needs to do more than hold back landscaping.

Steel sheet piling creates a deep structural wall that transfers resistance into the ground while retaining the soil behind it. Because the sheets interlock, the finished wall forms a continuous line of support. Sheet piling can also work well where available construction space is limited and a large conventional retaining wall footprint would be difficult to build.

For permanent projects, the installed sheets can remain as part of the finished retaining system. For temporary work, sheet piling can support an excavation while construction takes place.

Sheet Pile Retaining Walls vs. Conventional Retaining Walls

Factor Steel Sheet Piling Conventional Retaining Walls
Wall depth Extends deep into the ground to create structural earth retention Often relies on a footing and wider base closer to the surface
Space required Can create a relatively narrow wall profile Some systems require significant space behind or beneath the wall
Excavation Installed directly into the ground with specialized equipment May require substantial excavation for footings and drainage systems
Waterfront use Well suited to many shoreline and water-adjacent applications Not every retaining wall material is appropriate for waterfront conditions
Temporary use Can be used for temporary excavation support and shoring Most conventional retaining walls are built as permanent structures
Commercial applications Commonly suited to engineered earth-retention and excavation projects Depends heavily on wall type, height and engineering
Site-specific design Sheet size, depth and wall design are selected for project conditions Design requirements vary widely by wall material and application

Contractor Collaboration & Engineered Designs

Sheet piling projects often involve several moving parts, especially when excavation, grading, neighbouring structures or commercial construction are involved. Our team works with homeowners, builders, contractors and engineers to make sure the installation follows the requirements of the project.

Engineering is coordinated around the specific site rather than using a one-size-fits-all wall design. Whether your drawings call it steel sheet piling or sheet metal piling, we review the specified wall before we quote the installation. Soil conditions, retained height, water, loads behind the wall and the intended use of the sheet piling all help determine how the system should be designed.

By reviewing these details before installation begins, we can plan the equipment, sheet pile layout and installation approach around the actual project conditions.

Company-Owned Equipment for Sheet Pile Installation

DiamondTech owns and operates the equipment used for our sheet pile installations, including our 8-ton and 20-ton excavators. This gives our crew direct control over equipment setup, scheduling, mobilization and the work taking place on site.

Using company-owned equipment also allows us to plan each installation around the size and access requirements of the project rather than relying on third-party equipment availability. We also coordinate with steel sheet piling suppliers so the sheet piles specified for your wall are sourced and ready when installation is scheduled. We take on residential and commercial sheet piling projects throughout the GTA, Simcoe County, Muskoka and surrounding areas.

Before work begins, we review site access, ground conditions and the proposed wall location so the appropriate equipment can be planned for the job.

Permanent, Temporary & Waterfront Sheet Piling

Steel sheet piling can solve several different earth-retention problems. The final design depends on what the wall needs to do and the conditions surrounding it.

Permanent Retaining Walls

Sheet piles can remain in place as the permanent retaining system for properties with grade changes, slopes or other areas where soil needs structural support.

Temporary Sheet Piling Shoring

Sheet piling shoring can be used to retain surrounding soil during excavation and construction. This can help create a supported work area while foundations or other below-grade work takes place.

Shoreline Retaining Walls

Waterfront properties can experience soil movement and erosion where land meets the water. Steel sheet piling can be used to create a strong shoreline retaining wall designed for these demanding conditions.

Residential Projects

Sheet piling can be used on private properties where a structural retaining wall, shoreline wall or excavation support system is required.

Commercial Projects

We work with contractors, developers and project teams on larger sheet piling and shoring applications that require coordinated installation and engineered planning.

While planning a deck build for a friend, I reviewed the planning and steps needed for the 6 nessesary concrete piers and flared bottoms. It was going to be a big job. A friend recommended DiamondTech and after getting the quote, it was a no brainer to move forward with helical piles. Great communication from Chelsea, and very accurate and professional install team. Could not be happier.

Very positive experience. Trevor was very responsive and polite - a real delight to work with. With his team, they drove helical piles around our existing pool for our new deck. We definitely ran into obstacles with rocks, buried cement, roots and the cement pool collar, however, they found great solutions. I have absolutely no hesitation with recommending Diamond Tech Piles - they are great!

Sheet Piling FAQs

A sheet pile retaining wall is built from interlocking steel sections installed vertically into the ground. Together, the sheets create a continuous structural wall that holds back soil and can be designed for permanent retaining walls, shoreline applications or temporary construction support.

Yes. Sheet piling can be used for residential projects when the site requires a structural earth-retention system. It may be particularly useful for larger grade changes, waterfront properties, difficult soil conditions or sites where there is limited room for a wide conventional retaining wall.

Yes. DiamondTech installs sheet piling for both residential and commercial projects. Commercial uses can include permanent retaining walls, excavation support, temporary shoring and other engineered earth-retention applications.

Sheet piling shoring uses interlocking steel sheets to temporarily or permanently support soil beside an excavation. The sheet wall helps retain the surrounding ground while construction takes place within the excavated area.

Yes. Steel sheet piling can be incorporated into a permanent retaining-wall system when designed for the site’s loads, soil conditions and intended use. It can also be used temporarily during construction.

Yes. Steel sheet piling is commonly suited to waterfront earth-retention applications. A sheet pile wall can create a continuous barrier along a shoreline while retaining the soil behind it. The appropriate design depends on the specific property, soil, water conditions and engineering requirements.

Sheet piling cost varies considerably from project to project. Wall length and depth, steel requirements and current pricing from steel sheet piling suppliers, soil conditions, site access, installation equipment, engineering and whether the wall is temporary or permanent can all affect the final price. DiamondTech reviews the project details before preparing a quote.

There is no standard depth for every sheet pile wall. The required embedment depends on the height of retained soil, soil conditions, loads around the wall, water conditions and the engineering design. The sheets must extend deep enough to provide the resistance required for the specific project.

It serves the same basic purpose of retaining soil, but the construction method is different. A sheet pile wall uses interlocking steel sections installed vertically into the ground. Many conventional retaining walls instead use concrete, blocks, stone, timber or other systems built on excavated footings.

Engineering requirements depend on the project, wall height, site conditions and local building requirements. DiamondTech can coordinate the engineering needed for sheet piling projects so the installation is based on the actual conditions and project requirements.
